Traditional Matcha Tea
Here’s how to drink traditional matcha tea:
Traditional Matcha Tea Ingredients
You only need two ingredients to make a cup of traditional matcha green tea: ceremonial grade matcha powder, such as our Tea Lover’s Organic Ceremonial Matcha from My Matcha Life®, and water. The high concentration of L-theanine in the young tea leaves gives this grade of matcha powder a natural sweetness. If you add any additional ingredients, such as sugar or milk, that beautiful flavor is lost.
Traditional Matcha Tea Utensils
While you can make matcha tea in a mug, we recommend using a Japanese matcha tea bowl. You should also consider mixing your matcha with a bamboo matcha whisk, or chasen. Designed specifically for matcha preparation, this type of whisk is used to break up clumps and create a foamy froth. Whisking matcha green tea with a bamboo whisk also aerates the matcha tea powder and mellows the otherwise bitter-tasting tannins. Because the whisk is made of bamboo, it also won’t affect the smell or taste of the matcha powder like a metal whisk.
Traditional Matcha Tea Recipe
To make traditional matcha tea, take the following steps:
- Mix ½ to ¾ tsp ceremonial grade matcha powder and 1 ounce of hot water (about 180°F) in a matcha bowl or mug.
- Using your bamboo whisk, mix it gently into a paste.
- Add 2 ounces of hot water and whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion until frothy. If you whisk in a circular motion, your tea won’t foam.
- Add more water as desired.
- Enjoy your traditional matcha tea!
Matcha Latte
Matcha lattes have become a staple on every coffee house menu. What most people don’t know is that this creamy, energizing beverage is super easy to make at home. Hot or iced, sweetened or unsweetened, with plantbased milk—you can easily customize matcha lattes to suit your taste preferences.
The key to creating a delicious matcha latte is a high-quality matcha powder, such as our Barista’s Premium Matcha Tea from My Matcha Life®. Compared to the Tea Lover’s Organic Ceremonial Matcha, this type of matcha has a relatively smooth but bold matcha green tea flavor, which makes it perfect for lattes.
Matcha Latte Recipe
The basic matcha latte recipe is as followed:
- Bring 1 cup of plant-based milk to a simmer on medium-high heat
- Add sweeter to taste, if you desire
- Place 1 tsp of matcha powder into a matcha bowl or mug
- Add two tablespoons of hot plant-based milk to the matcha powder
- Whisk until smooth and frothy
- Add the remaining milk and stir

Bulletproof Matcha
If you enjoy coffee but hate the jittery side effects, you may want to switch your morning cup of joe for matcha. Even though matcha and coffee both contain caffeine, it affects the body in different ways.
Unlike coffee, which will leave you feeling jittery and cause your energy levels to crash, matcha provides sustained energy throughout the day. It even makes you feel more focused and alert. You can also experience the same calming effects of matcha and the benefits of MCT oil by creating a matcha spin on the popular Bulletproof coffee. If you’re hoping to enjoy a daily cup of energizing matcha tea instead of coffee, consider trying our Bulletproof Matcha recipe.
Bulletproof Matcha Recipe
Take the following steps to create Bulletproof matcha:
- Add 1/2 tsp of matcha to a matcha bowl
- Pour in 1 oz of hot water
- Whisk the matcha
- Add 1 tablespoon of grass-fed butter and continue whisking
- Add 1 tsp of MCT oil and continue whisking
- Pour in 4 ounces of hot water while whisking
