Summertime is a fun time but also a time to be skin cautious! Fortunately for all of us who worry about the face we put forward, there is a good body of scientific studies suggesting that green tea not only fights free radicals from within but topically can protect your skin from sun damage.

Matcha has ‘The Key’ to Success

The key is in matcha’s green tea polyphenols, those antioxidant compounds, such as EGCG catechins, that are necessary for plant photosynthesis. In humans, they neutralize the cell-damaging free radicals that cause a variety of skin (and health) issues.

Calli O’Brien (MML CEO and co-founder) personally tested the efficacy of the Matcha Coconut Oil Face Mask recipe below. She applied it once per week for two weeks and relieved inflamed eczema which had been irritating her for months, and another matcha fan used the mask to reduce acne. We invite you to try these masks and share your results. Doing your own research is very satisfying when you see the reduction in fine lines showing up on your face and/or when the age spots on your hand begin to lighten.

Matcha Coconut Oil and Lemon Face Mask Recipe

Matcha’s EGCG catechin nourishes and protects skin against sun damage. Coconut Oil is anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and naturally anti-bacterial. Lemon juice helps to reduce dark spots and remove dead skin cells. When used in a facemask, this combination adds up to healthy, radiant-looking skin! Open a bag of Foodie’s Matcha and try this Matcha Face Mask for yourself.

Single Application Recipe

Ingredients
3/4 tbsp of Matcha green tea Barista’s Matcha or Foodie’s.
(Note: all our matcha is high in EGCG, so Tea Lover‘s could be used too)
Juice from ½ lemon
1/2 tsp coconut oil
Hot water

Directions
1. First, use your favourite cleanser to prepare your face and neck.*
2. Mix the Matcha powder, coconut oil, and lemon juice together, and add a small amount of water, if needed, to make a paste. The paste should be thick enough to adhere to the skin, but thin enough that you can apply it smoothly.
3. Spread evenly over your entire face and neck and let dry for 30 minutes.
4. Rinse the mask off with cold water using a dark-coloured cloth, then apply your own moisturizer.**
Your skin should feel velvety smooth and tight.

For even better results use an exfoliator before applying the mask, and a toner after rinsing it off.
We recommend a dark cloth as it will be easier to clean, but rest assured the green colour of the paste will not stain your skin.
